Travellers often assume booking a coastal boat trip includes stepping inside the historic mining gallery. They are entirely separate operations run by different entities:
Official municipal tour through Cesare Vecelli's subterranean 1924 galleries.
Coastal boat and zodiac excursions navigating the base of the Masua cliffs.
Carved directly into the limestone cliffs of Masua, Porto Flavia is one of the Mediterranean's most ingenious industrial landmarks. Designed in 1924 by Venetian engineer Cesare Vecelli and named after his eldest daughter Flavia, the installation was commissioned by Belgian syndicate Vieille Montagne to solve a critical mineral transport bottleneck.
Before 1924, zinc and lead extracted from Masua mines had to be loaded by hand onto small wooden sailing boats (bilancelle) manned by Carloforte sailors and shipped to San Pietro island. This process was vulnerable to mistral swells, taking up to 10 days per cargo ship and multiplying transport costs.
Vecelli's design eliminated the need for a harbor. He excavated two parallel 600-metre tunnels inside the cliff. In the upper tunnel, electric Decauville trains poured ore into 9 vertical rock-carved silos with a total storage capacity of 10,000 metric tons. Below, a retractable conveyor belt reached out through a cliffside arch 37 metres above the sea, pouring ore directly into cargo ships moored in deep water. This slashed ship loading times from 10 days to under 24 hours, reducing shipping costs by 70 percent. Vecelli adorned the seaward portal with decorative concrete arches and a neo-Gothic tower. The site operated until the 1960s and was meticulously restored in the 2000s.
Objective field warnings, physical constraints, and strict municipal policies you must know before booking.
No walk-up ticket counter operates at the mine gate. Every ticket must be reserved in advance via www.iglesiasturismo.it. During summer, slots sell out 10 to 14 days ahead. Travellers without barcoded reservation receipts are turned away.
Sturdy, closed-toe athletic trainers or hiking shoes are mandatory. Anyone arriving in flip-flops, sandals, slides, open-toed shoes, or heels is denied entry with zero refund. Hard hats are provided on-site.
The tour requires walking 600 metres along an unpaved upper gallery, plus climbing 108 steep concrete steps between tunnels. Unsuitable for individuals with severe cardiac conditions or acute claustrophobia.
Wheeled baby strollers cannot navigate gravel tunnels or the 108-step staircase. Infants under one year must be carried in a front baby sling and wear the provided infant safety helmet.
Boat tours view the 37-metre loading portal and Pan di Zucchero from the water. Boats cannot disembark passengers onto the cliff wall or access the mine interior.
Masua Beach car park charges €2.00/hour (€5 half-day, €10 full-day). Meters accept cash and coins only—no credit cards. Mobile signal drops out in the cove, so download your digital tickets before driving down SP83.
Official municipal regulations strictly prohibit animals of any size inside the tunnels due to narrow passages and safety codes.
Porto Flavia is located on the coastal cliffs of Masua, within the municipality of Iglesias. Reaching the complex requires coordinating transit along regional roads or public rail-bus services:
www.iglesiasturismo.it.A visit to Porto Flavia can be combined with exploring nearby industrial and natural coastal highlights:
Rising 133 metres directly opposite Porto Flavia's balcony, Pan di Zucchero is the tallest limestone sea stack in the Mediterranean, featuring natural sea arches, rock climbing routes, and dedicated Pan di Zucchero boat tours departing directly from the cove below.
Located 3 km south along SP83, the 1897 stone ruins of Laveria Lamarmora cascade down coastal cliffs across 300 steps. Built to wash lead and zinc ores, it is free, open 24/7, and provides sweeping views across the Mediterranean.
This 500-kilometre historical trail traces miners' pathways. Stage 17 connects Nebida to Masua along cliff edges, leading past ventilation shafts and abandoned mining hamlets before reaching Porto Flavia.
Avoid commercial beach bars and seek authentic trattorie in Gonnesa or Iglesias for slow-roasted suckling pig (porceddu), culurgiones pasta, and mirto (see our guide on Sardinia dining & tipping etiquette). Note that removing sand, pebbles, or shells carries regional fines of €500 to €3,000.
Real-time conditions for Masua beach and the clifftop portal. Southwestern Sardinia enjoys over 300 days of sunshine, but morning mistral breezes should be checked prior to booking boat tours.

Direct answers to the most common questions regarding mine access and coastal visits.
Visiting Porto Flavia requires an official guided tour booked online via Iglesias Turismo (iglesiasturismo.it). Visitors walk roughly 600m along the upper gallery, exploring 9 mineral silos before reaching the clifftop balcony 37m above sea level. Hard hats are provided.
The mine walk takes you underground through 600m tunnels and down 108 steps to stand on the clifftop portal looking down. Boat tours depart from Masua Beach or Buggerru Marina to cruise past sea caves and Pan di Zucchero from the water. Boats cannot enter the mine.
If official mine walk tickets are sold out, book a sea-level boat tour from Masua Beach or Buggerru Marina to admire the monument from the water, check the portal at 07:30–08:30 AM for released cancellations, or explore the free cliffside ruins of Laveria Lamarmora in nearby Nebida.
By car, drive west from Cagliari along SS130 to Iglesias (~45 min), take SS126 towards Gonnesa, and follow coastal road SP83 to Masua (68 km, ~1h 15m total). By public transit, take the Trenitalia train to Iglesias (€4–€5), then board ARST Bus Route 808 directly to Masua.
Parking is located at Masua Beach (Parcheggio Spiaggia Masua). In summer, parking meters charge €2.00/hour (€5 half-day, €10 full-day). Meters accept cash and coins only—credit cards are not accepted. From the car park, allow 15 minutes to walk 200m up to the ticket office. For complete driving blueprints from the capital, read our Cagliari to Porto Flavia day trip guide, or consult our Masua beach guide for seaside amenities.
Sturdy, closed-toe athletic trainers or hiking shoes are mandatory. Sandals, flip-flops, slides, and open shoes are strictly prohibited; staff will deny entry without refund to anyone wearing improper shoes. Protective hard hats are provided free of charge.
